Welcome,

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you and welcome you to Boston University. We hope that your employment here will be rewarding, and a fulfillment towards your future goals! All technical, office and professional employees at Boston University are covered by a union contract/agreement negotiated between UAW TOP Local 2324 and the University. The contract/agreement, given to you at your orientation, outlines your guaranteed benefits and pay raises, the University's obligation to provide a safe workplace free from discrimination, and your right to have the Union represent you if there are problems at your work.  If you do not receive a copy of the most recent contract/agreement between B.U. and Local 2324 at orientation, please contact the local office local2324@local2324uaw.org.

Here at Boston University, we have over 600 staff members who are members of the Union. They receive guaranteed wage increases, retirement benefits, tuition benefits, health and dental insurance, paid sick, vacation, holiday, personal time, and a grievance procedure with binding arbitration for settling disputes -- all of which have been won through collective bargaining between B.U. and the U.A.W. members! We invite you to join us.

Both members and agency fee-payers (non-members) pay the same amount to the Union.  Union members have the right to participate in all aspects of the union--voting on the terms of the contract, voting for officers and stewards who administer the contract and represent you, and voting on the policy and direction of the Union.  Agency Fee payers are represented but have no voting rights even though they pay the same fees.  Under Article 3 of the current Boston University and Local 2324 UAW Agreement, to remain a B.U. employee, you must choose whether to be a union member or agency fee payer within 45 days of your date of hire.  We hope you choose to belong to the Union.

Dues are mandated by the UAW International of two hours pay per month (taken in four weekly increments each month) and at the UAW Local level of $6.52 a month (taken in four weekly increments each month).  In the event there is a five-week month, no dues will be taken out the fifth week.  In addition to the mandated dues, there is a one-time initiation fee of $30.00 (taken in three weekly increments of $10.00).  We do not start deducting dues until at least your 45th day of employment.

If you have any questions or concerns about the enclosed information, please contact the Union Office at the number above. We thank you again for this opportunity to welcome you.  We hope that you'll think about the opportunities we have mentioned and consider our Union as a friend in your corner!

In solidarity,

Chris Snook, President
